And Adam said to Eve: Let us do penance, perhaps the Lord will relent and have pity on us and provide for us. And Eve said to Adam: Tell me, my lord, what is penance, and how shall we do it?

And Adam said: Can you do as much as I? I cannot promise. Only let us do penance. I will do forty days of fasting. But do you arise and go to the river Tigris.

Take a stone and stand on it in the water up to your neck. And let no word come out of your mouth, for we are unworthy to pray to the Lord, for our lips are unclean.

And stay in the water of the river thirty-seven days. But I will spend forty days in the water of the Jordan. Perhaps the Lord God will take pity on us.
