As I was fasting and seated on a certain mountain, and giving thanks to the Lord for all that He had done unto me, I saw the shepherd seated by me. And he said: Why hast thou come hither so early in the morning?
2
Because, sir, I say, I have a station. What is a station? he said. I am fasting, sir, I say. He said: This fast which ye fast is useless. It is not a fast unto God. But still keep on fasting.
3
I will teach thee what a fast is that is complete and acceptable unto the Lord. Listen, he said. God desireth not such a vain fast; for by so fasting thou availest nothing for righteousness.
4
But keep this fast that I am about to teach thee. Do no wickedness in thy life, but serve the Lord with a pure heart; keep His commandments, walking in His ordinances, and let no evil desire arise in thy heart.
5
And believe in God. If thou doest these things, and fearest Him, and art continent from every evil thing, thou shalt live unto God. And if thou do these things, thou shalt fulfil a great fast, and one acceptable before God.
