And when Joshua had heard the words of Moses that were so written in his writing, all things which he had foretold,
He rent his garments and cast himself at the feet of Moses. And Moses comforted him and wept with him.
And Joshua answered him and said: Wherefore dost thou comfort me, lord? And how shall I be comforted in regard to the bitter word which thou hast spoken?
Which proceeded from thy mouth, which is full of tears and lamentation, in that thou departest from this people?
What place shall receive thee? Or what shall be the monument of thy sepulchre? Or who shall dare to move thy body from thence as that of a mere mortal from place to place?
For all who die according to their age are buried in the earth. But thy burial is from the rising to the setting of the sun, and from the south to the confines of the north. All the world is thy sepulchre.
Lord, thou departest. Who shall nourish this people? Who shall have compassion on them, and who shall be their guide on the way?
Who shall pray for them, not omitting a single day, in order that I may lead them into the land of their fathers?
How therefore can I be to this people as a father to his only son, or as a woman to her virgin daughter, who is being prepared to be given to a husband?
Who shall guard them and protect them, and who shall be their advocate, to make prayer for them, not omitting a single day, to lead them into the land of their inheritance?
How therefore can I suffice for this people? Moses was their shepherd and their prophet.
And Moses answered and said unto Joshua: Fear not, Joshua, and be not troubled; for God saw among all the nations of the world whom He chose. And He foresaw me and them from the beginning of the creation of the earth.
And I was prepared from the foundation of the world to be the mediator of the covenant. And so I tell thee, Joshua, for it is not from my own strength but His compassion which He prepared for this people. Reserve these words in thy heart, and keep them.
